OKLAND

Artist Note:

I love Oakland. This series is about teaching and living in East Oakland. It is about repetitive sounds. Rubber meeting the road. Feeling like you're going in circles. Sideshows. The fact people have many layers. There's something to be said about the culture of mark making of all kinds in Oakland, and how it's history (and structures) are constantly painted over. The lines in this series represent paths we take, our lives, our journey, how they collide, cross, and parallel each other. We are all contained within a single canvas; space and time. Okland is a reference to how some of my students spelled Oakland. It's a critique of systems of stratification, how so much of Oakland has been divided through redlining, gentrification, a lack of access to education, the freeways, that it now exist as multiple distinct lands.
